Team

Alexandre Eppinghaus Varella

Graduated from the Law School of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro in 1998. From 1991 to 1993, he acted as a trainee at the law Firm of Villemor Amaral Advogados. In January 1995, he joined Veirano e Advogados Associados, first as a trainee and later as a lawyer, where he worked at the Firm's civil litigation department until 2001, when he left to constitute his own law Firm, Varella & Advogados Associados. For all his career, Alexandre has been involved in litigation, assisting foreign and national clients from the most diversified areas. In addition to civil and commercial litigation, Alexandre is an experienced lawyer on Administrative Law and Bankruptcy field, counseling and representing his clients on judicial liquidation and judicial reorganization. Alexandre has started assisting Export Credit Agencies (“ECAs”) during the year of 1996, when he first handled a collection case in Brazil on behalf of Export Import Bank of United States (“Ex-Im Bank”). Afterwards, he has been assisting Ex-Im Bank on collection matters in quite a lot of cases, including judicial and extrajudicial collections, debt rescheduling instruments and the rendering of legal opinions on Brazilian legal issues related to the enforcement of credit instruments and collaterals thereof, among others. As a consequence of his expertise on collection of ECAs credits in Brazil, Alexandre through his Firm has also been retained by the Export Development of Canada (“EDC”) and the Oesterreichische Kontrollbank AG (“OeKB”) to render legal services regarding the collection of credits arising from export financing and to assist on the origination of the finance transactions, including the draft and proper execution of loan documents, guarantee instruments and the registry thereof before the corresponding Brazilian Notaries and Agencies. Upon the acknowledged expertise in legal advice related to the origination and negotiation of export financing credits, Alexandre has been retained by lenders and manufacturers located in United States of America, Canada and Europe to render legal services during the contracting phase, asset management and credit recovery. In addition to Ex-Im Bank, OeKB and EDC, Alexandre is currently rendering legal services on renegotiation and collection of credits backed by the Luxembourg Export Credit Agency (“ODL”), the UK Finance, Euler Hermes and SACE. He is fluent in English.

Christiane Moraes Lemgruber

Graduated from the Fluminense Federal University (UFF). She has acted as a trainee at Trench Rossi e Watanabe Advogados ("TRW" - Baker & Mackenzie office in Brazil) during the year of 2005. In January 2006, Ms. Ana Tereza Basilio, the international partner from TRW's litigation area, left the Firm and invited her to join Andrade & Fichtner Advogados, first as a trainee and later as a lawyer. In January 2009, Ms. Basilio left the Firm to constitute her own law Firm, Basilio Advogados, and invited her to join the Firm. In March 2010, she joined Varella & Advogados as attorney focused in civil and commercial litigation assisting foreign and national clients. She also acts in administrative and real estate property law. She is fluent in English.

Eduardo Salgado Viegas

Graduated at the University Cândido Mendes Law School. From 2004 to 2005, he acted as a legal trainee at The Brazilian National Agency of Oil & Gas - ANP, where he worked with focus on Oil agreements from Down Stream area. From December 2005 to September 2006 he acted as a trainee at the Law Department of Concremat Engineering Group, with na emphasis in Administrative and Corporate law. He joined Varella & Advogados first as a trainee, and later as a lawyer. Mr. Viegas has experience with civil, administrative and commercial litigation. He is fluent in English.

Guilherme Vieira Assumpção

Graduated from the National Law School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1999, Guilherme acted as partner of recognized law firms in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, before constituting his own law Firm. Since the beginning of his career Guilherme has been involved in litigation, assisting foreign and national clients in the areas of Civil Law and Bankruptcy. After working for many years together with Alexandre Varella in some joint projects, Guilherme decided to join Varella & Advogados Associados and dedicate his activities to the assisting of Export Credit Agencies (“ECAs”), foreign banks and manufacturers on judicial and extrajudicial collection matters, as well as rendering legal opinions on Brazilian legal issues related to the enforcement of credit instruments and the respective collaterals. Guilherme is focused on rendering legal services since the origination of export financing transactions, working from the drafting of loan documents and guarantee instruments, the negotiation and drafting of debt rescheduling instruments, and the registry thereof before the corresponding Brazilian Notaries and Agencies, up to the judicial and extrajudicial collection of the respective credits. Guilherme is also involved in assisting creditors during the judicial and administrative phases of Liquidation and Judicial Reorganization of Brazilian debtors, aiming at obtaining the best payment conditions for the owing credits. He is fluent in English.

Hans Christian von Blücher

Graduated from the National Law School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Since May 2016, he joined the staff of Varella & Advogados Associados, firstly as legal clerk, and later as a lawyer, working in the areas of Civil and Corporate Law, focusing on Collection, Bankruptcy and Corporate Judicial Reorganization. Helio Varella Jacob Filho

Graduated from the Law School of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro in 1967. Before joining the Firm, he was member of Villemor Amaral Law Firm from 1965 to 1994 (Partner since 1969, Financial/Administrative Director, Resident Partner to the São Paulo Office and law clerk). He is also a member of the Brazilian Bar Association and former senior member of the Inter-American Bar association. During the years 1966 and 1967, he worked as a law clerk in the Department of the General Attorney's Office of the State of Rio de Janeiro. He completed a course on Comparative Jurisprudence at the Inter-American Law Institute, School of Law of New York University (1971/1972) as well as courses on "Law and Economics" and "Rights relating to Trademarks and Patents" at the School of Law of the New York University. He worked as a foreign associated at the Law Offices of Kronish Lieb, Shainswit, Helman & Hamilton and Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton, both in New York. He was counsel to the Brazilian Debureaucratization Program (PND) during the period 1982/1983 while he was also working with the "Rio de Janeiro Development Council" - CODERJ and "Rio de Janeiro Federation of the Commercial, Industrial and Rural Associations" - FACIARJ, both in connection with PND. During 1984/1985 he was a member of the Fiscal Council of Mesbla S.A. and from 1984 to 1985 a member of the American Chamber of Commerce in São Paulo.

Julia Starling Basilio

Graduated at the Fluminense Federal University. Post-graduated at the Escola da Magistratura do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. From August 2008 to March 2009, she acted as a legal trainee at the Rio de Janeiro General State Attorney Office – PGE, where she workedat the the specialized Tax Office. Also as a trainee, from January 2010 to December 2012, she acted at the 25th Capital Civil Court and 13th Public Revenue Court of Rio de Janeiro State Court of Justice, with emphasis in Civil, Administrative and Commercial law. From January 2010 to April 2013, she acted as a lawyer at the Law Department of CCAA, with emphasis in Commercial and Civil law. In May, 2013, she joined the firm as attorney focused in Commercial, Civil and administrative litigation. In addition, she also acts in Oil & Gas matters. She is fluent in English and Spanish.

Natércia Escorel Cordeiro de Castro e Silva

Graduated from the National Law School of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 2016. She specialized her studies in international law during an academic year, between August 2014 and July 2015, at the University of Aix Marseille, France. On her return to Brazil, she joined Varella & Advogados Associados, firstly as legal clerk, and later as a lawyer, working in the areas of Civil and Corporate Law, focusing on Collection, Bankruptcy and Corporate Judicial Reorganization. Export Finance: Origination, Renegotiation and Collection

Varella & Advogados Associados has acknowledged expertise in legal advice related to the origination and negotiation of export financing credits granted to Brazilian companies by foreign financial institutions and Export Credit Agencies, working in the contracting phase, as well as in the renegotiation and collection of the credits. These services involve asset management and credit recovery, as well as advices on all legal issues arising out the finance agreements and collateral instruments thereof. In this connection, the firm is currently assisting foreign financial institutions and Export Credit Agencies on judicial and extrajudicial collections and credit rescheduling negotiations all over Brazil. The firm also renders services to manufacturers, exporters and lenders engaged on the ECAs financing programs, assisting on the draft of legal instruments and accomplishment of legal requirements precedents to the respective funding or sales. Such work includes the rendering of opinions on the proper execution of the loan documents and the registry of the security interest instruments before the corresponding Brazilian Notaries and Agencies.

Foreign Capital

The firm is well qualified to advise foreign clients on Brazilian Central Bank (BACEN) Regulatory regarding any sorts of investments in Brazil, having long experience in matters involving the incorporation of businesses, the acquiring of assets, reinvestments and repatriation of capital, remittance of profits, and all other similar matters.

Our lawyers are experienced in all types of civil and commercial litigation, having practiced in every kind of upper and lower court in Brazil. Commercial Law

The Firm is specialized in the drawing up, negotiation and termination of all types of business and commercial contracts, including export finance agreements, distribution and representation agreements, mortgage, chattel mortgage and pledge agreements, among others, and it relies on experienced professionals in handling litigation resulting from such contractual relations. Our lawyers are also prepared to advise on questions involving asset management and credit recovery vis-à-vis both bankruptcy filings, the liquidation under chapter 7 and the reorganization under chapter 11. The Firm also counsels clients on how to avoid suits based on the Consumers Defense Code.

Real Estate Law
